Emergency Scientific was founded in 2020 in Salt Lake City, UT by a team of experienced product developers, investors, and entrepreneurs to develop a specialty catheter for resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) procedure. REBOA is a minimally invasive technique using a balloon catheter to temporarily occlude the aorta in support of hemorrhage control. In trauma, hemorrhage is the leading cause of potentially survivable death. Non-compressible truncal hemorrhage (NCTH) is of particular interest, because there are limited clinical options to temporize large vessels during pelvic hemorrhage. REBOA is also useful in other procedures including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), gastrointestinal (GI) bleeds, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), and potentially in cardiac arrest. Emergency Scientific received FDA 510k clearance to market the Landmark REBOA Catheter in November 2022 and also continues to develop next generation technologies for the emergency medicine, critical care, and trauma community.
